From the Editors

Last year was a transformational one for us as Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration changed from a semi-annual to a quarterly schedule and began publication as part of the Springer Verlag organization. We believe that these changes will further our goal of promoting scientific exchange between China, the United States and the international community and we look forward to working with Springer in the coming years.

Our efforts have also achieved recognition in several prominent sources of information, including the Engineering Index (EI)/Compendex, Earthquake Engineering Abstracts, Geological Abstracts, Georef, Geotechnical Abstracts, International Civil Engineering Abstracts, Quakeline, Shock and Vibration Digest, Technology Information Institute of China Wan Fang data-digital periodicals, and the Transportation Research Information Service. We hope that this exposure, together with Springer Verlag’s extensive distribution network, will help to accelerate knowledge transfer among the international community.

Looking ahead to 2008, we are planning to emphasize particular issues in earthquake engineering by dedicating an entire issue to a special topic. In this perspective, the December 2008 issue will focus on the state-of-the-art of seismic behavior and design of bridges. We anticipate that the issue will contain about 10 papers on this topic contributed from both China and the U.S. In the coming years, we hope to expand the earthquake engineering knowledge base in principles, approaches and technologies to encompass new areas such as protection of buildings, bridges and infrastructure systems due to combined earthquake and other hazards. We sincerely invite your contributions in these areas and look forward to future issues dedicated to special themes such as high performance buildings and bridges, and multiple hazard resilient structures, lifelines and communities.

The 14th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, to be held in October 2008 in Beijing, China, provides us with an opportunity to express our special thanks to our contributors. The Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration will sponsor a reception during the Conference and we cordially invite our past and future contributors to join us to celebrate our success to date and at the same time, provide us with your insight, advice and suggestions on how we can improve future issues.

We thank the managing editors, Dr. Jianguo Xiong and Ms. Jane Stoyle, for their fine effort and commitment to the success of the Journal. They have made a substantial effort to ensure that non-native English speaking authors present their ideas in a clear and correct manner by professionally editing each submission. We also thank the Editorial Board members and contributing authors for offering us their outstanding knowledge in the field of earthquake engineering and engineering vibration.
